Once upon a time...

there was a girl whom wished to have a little fluffy pet to hold. She searched far and wide for a little pet. The girl searched the Internet and read all the books. After some research she set out to find her chosen pet. She searched far and wide for a little pet. Finally, she found her little fluffy friend crouching inside a cage hiding from the dogs barking and sunlight.

From that day one she would love her little pet and provide anything it needed.

That was the beginning of my adventure raising a chinchilla. It has been an interesting journey and I hope to continue learning about this fascinating pet more. If you are interesting in learning more about my journey with my chinchilla scroll down below Chilly's picture for all the juicy details.

In the beginning I thought...

she was not very bright. She always seemed so scared of everything and I feared the worst about her. I feared I would not be able to hold her as I had intended. Well, this came to be mostly true after some time. Everyday I would open her cage and place my arm inside to let her roam on my arm. I had read about letting the pet get used to you by making your arm be still like a tree branch. After about two days she began to jump on my arm and sometimes bite me in a playful manner. I was so delighted to begin my breakthrough with Chilly. I continued to do this for about 2-3 weeks everyday. Letting Chilly be in control of the situation.

Many moons later...

I began to feel sorry for Chilly. So I decided to make a 'Chilly proofed' room. After taking all the electrical cords up off the floor, checking for secret escape routes, and looking around for any type of danger for my pet I moved the cage to the room. I shut the door and let the door down. Chilly exited with extreme caution looking around for any predators. After a few moments Chilly began to roam. She looked at everything twice. She also began to climb up the tallest items in the room, falling into her natural behavior. We had several days like this I would finish my homework and Chilly would play for an hour or so. Chilly began to trust me more over time, she was now letting me pet her softly on the side. I was so happy to see my chinchilla wall surf as I had read about in all the books.

Tips to think about before buying a chinchilla.

  • Chinchillas are generally not good animals for children, unless your child is extremely mature and calm.
  • Chinchillas are picky eaters and require good food.
  • Chinchillas need special treats.
  • Chinchillas are not cheap to care for; food, bedding, treats, minerals, chew sticks and more are a few things you will need for a happy chinchilla.
  • You need a room for your chinchilla to roam in, free of chinchilla dangers such as wires, holes to the outside world (dryer vents), remove any nice wood furniture, and other chewable items.
  • Chinchillas need special dust to take a bath in and a tub big enough to flip in freely. (Note on bath dust, the pet store kind can irritate the eyes I buy Diatomaceous Earth shell flour, you can look it up on google and its cheaper.)

Loving my Chinchilla is...

a full time job full of fun and major responsibility. Despite all the hard work it takes to own a chinchilla, I love my pet. She is really entertaining, funny, and smart. I am constantly in awe of how sweet she can be on a good day (just like humans chinchillas have bad days too.) If you decide to buy a chinchilla please think about all the aspects of owning one. For example, my chinchilla wears her wheel or flying saucer out twice a year and those cost $40 a piece, her food is $10 a month, treats can cost $20 if you really spoil your pet, timothy hay costs $5 a small bag which last a month, and bedding $7 a bag lasts two weeks. All those costs add up to an expensive pet in the end, so put some thought into owning a chinchilla.
